Ski Tours in the Sierra Nevada
by Marcus Libkind.
This is an excellent 4-volume series on Sierra Nevada, California cross country
ski tours. Each tour is rated for distance, time, and difficulty,
and has a detailed description, with a topo map of the area.
Ski Tours in Lassen Volcanic National Park
(1989)
by Marcus Libkind.
Similar to Libkind's series on Sierra Nevada, this book covers
Lassen Volcanic National Park in northern California.
Cross Country Skiing in Yosemite
2d ed.
(1999)
by Tim Messick.
Written by an instructor at the Yosemite Ski School,
this book has tours for all levels in Yosemite National Park.
Illustrated with maps and photos.
The Perfect Art:
The Ostrander Hut & Ski Touring in Yosemite
(1995)
by Howard Weamer.
Beautiful photographs, history, and background information
of a Yosemite backcountry ski hut by
photographer and hutmeister Howard Weamer.
Not available in bookstores.

Order directly from the author.
Pray for Snow: The History of Skiing in Southern California (2002) by Ingrid R. Wicken, Assoc. Professor, Riverside Community College Interesting book on the early skiers in Southern California. Lots of pictures, illustrations, and interesting personal stories. 207pp., Trade paperback, 8.5x11", about 200 ill., bibliography, & index. ISBN 0-97160140-2. To purchase an autographed copy from the author ($30), contact her through her webpage or write Box 273, Norco, CA 92860.
Lost Sierra; Gold, Ghosts & Skis: Legendary Days of Skiing in the California Mining Camps (1992) by William B. Berry Interesting book on Sierra Nevada Minters, the first skiers in California, in the mid-1800s. Lots of pictures and interesting text on their "long board" skis and races.
Oregon Descents: A Backcountry Ski Guide To The Southern Cascades (1997) by David L. Waag. 30 tours cover Southern Cascades from Mt. Adams (in Oregon) to Mt. Shasta (in California)
Alpine Trailblazer: Where to Hike, Ski, Bike, Pack, and Fish in and Around Alpine County (1999) by Jerry Sprout. Covers area between Tahoe and Yosemite; includes 32 XC ski trips. For this area, however, I recommend Ski Tours in the Sierra Nevada vol. 2 instead.
High Odyssey: the first solo winter assault of Mt. Whitney and the Muir Trail area, from the diary of Orland Bartholomew and photographs taken by him (c. 1987, repr. 1994) by Gene Rose. Interesting book of a man who skied the Sierra crest in 1929 before anything of the sort was popular or even considered.
Snowshoe Trails of Yosemite
(1999)
by Michael C. White
Snowshoe Trails of Tahoe
(1999)
by Michael C. White.
Snowshoe Trails of California:
90 of the Best Routes in the Cascades & the Sierra
(2001)
by Michael C. White.
Backcountry Skiing California's High Sierra
(1999)
by John Moynier.
This book is full of wild, hard-core tours in the High Sierra backcountry.
It's chock-full of advice on routes and where to go in this
backcountry that's infrequently-visited in winter.
Alpine Trailblazer:
Where to Hike, Ski, Bike, Pack, & Fish in & Around Alpine County
(1999)
by Jerry Sprout.
Covers Sierra Nevada between Yosemite and Lake Tahoe.
Cross Country Skiing in Southern California
(1993)
by Eugene Mezereny.
Describes 24 ski tours, with maps, in Southern
California, principally the San Gabriel Mountains (Angeles National Forest).
Many tours are geared for alpine backcountry skiers.
Instead of this book, however, I recommend
Ski Tours in Southern California,
which is newer and covers a lot more places to ski.
50 Classic Backcountry Ski and Snowboard Summits in California:
Mount Shasta to Mount Whitney
(1999)
by Paul Richins, Jr.
Excellent guide to several summits accessible by backcountry skiing in winter,
mainly in the Sierra Nevada, and a few around Shasta/Lassen.
Tours are well described and mapped
and includes interesting background information.
Trailside video: Ski Touring California's High Sierra (1996) Video with ski guide S. P. Parker and Sue Irwin skiing and snow camping in the eastern Sierra Nevada mountains.
Cross-Country Skiing California: Groomed Trails and Where to Stay,
from Mount Shasta to Kings Canyon
(2000)
by Michael Jeneid
Written by the directory of the
Sierra Club's Cross-Country Ski School at Clair Tappaan Lodge.
This book has interesting sections on skiing history and how to ski,
however, it's not a guidebook.
This book broadly describes areas to ski
and lodging, but doesn't describe any ski trail and has no ski maps.
I recommend Marcus Libkind's books instead.

These books are out-of-print (OOP), but residue stock can still be found in out-of-the-way bookstores and used bookstores.
Ski Touring in California
1st. ed. (Self published, 1972), 2d. ed. (Wilderness Press, 1980)
by Dave Beck.
ISBN 0-89997-034-6.
A classic book by an expert guide, who still guides out of Tahoe.
This book was the first to cover Sierra ski touring.
Still very relevant (the mountains are the same, only slight trailhead changes).
Chapters on Ski gear & technique, avalanches & route finding.
Covers Shasta, Lassen, Tahoe, Mammoth, East Sierra, West Sierra,
Southern California, and Trans-Sierra tours.
Plenty of used copies available.
Ski Touring the Eastern High Sierra
(Fine Edge Productions, 1990)
96pp. ISBN 0-938665-08-1
by Don Douglass and Chris Lombardo.
Covers Eastern Sierra Nevada with easier tours.
This book probably is out-of-print because it's about an underappreciated
area of the Sierra. The Eastern Sierra is great though with it's colder,
fresher snow and dramatic peaks towering above.
This book is more for the beginner or intermediate as the more advanced
tours are not covered.
This book just went OOP recently (1999?) but
it's still in stock at AlpenBooks (wholesale),
and Barnes & Noble
and TrailStuff.com
(retail).
The Best Ski Touring in America (Sierra Club Books, 1987) 266pp. ISBN 0-87156-722-9 by Steve Barnett Covers North America. One tour describes both Mt. San Gorgonio and San Jacintio. Another intresting tour describes skiing in Sierra San Pedro Martir in Alta Baja California, Mexico. I have one copy for sale. It's new, but the cover has scuff marks on the edges. $16 + CA sales tax + $2 shipping/handling. If interested, fill out the comment form for details.
Shorty Lovelace, Kings Canyon Fur Trapper (Sequoia Natural History Association, 1980) by William C. Tweed. Book on an early, but unknown, 1800s Sierra Nevada backcountry skier. Out of print.
Sierra Spring Ski-Touring
(Mountain Press, 1971)
by Hans Joachim Bruheene.
Hard cover. 96pp. No ISBN.
This book has 28 tours in the Sierra, and San Jac and San G.
in Southern California.
The photographs are wondeful and the book is entertaining to read.
This book was available at Sport Chalet until the early 1990s.
